Our Journey by Car
We preferred to drive by car because Shimla is just 115 KM from Chandigarh. The road was under construction and for that reason we faced a little difficulty while driving.
On the way to Shimla we took the following route as per the google map and road signs.
Chandigarh -> Panchkula -> Solan -> Shimla
The road was really in a very bad condition just before Solan. So, we decided to change the route and go via Barog while coming back. It is an absolute clean road. You can avoid the bumpy ride for few kilometers from Solan to Barog.
Shimla -> Solan -> Barog -> Panchkula -> Chandigarh
It took about 3.5 hours to reach Shimla. Our resort was near kufri so we decided to roam around Shimla before checking into the resort.
Day -1 (Shimla Mall Road and Ridge)
2:00 PM – Difficulty in finding the parking
It was our first trip to Shimla and we were not well informed with the difficulty of parking. The Mall Road is the main attraction of Shimla. It’s not just the only attraction, and there are so many other places to visit nearby like Church, Temples, Wood Market and Ridge.
There are two ways to reach the mall road. One is via Kufri road and the other is via Old Bus Stand road.
You will see a lot of guides trying to stop your car. They charge 200 rupees for a day and promise to show you the whole Shimla. We wanted to enjoy the mall road so we did not hire any guide.
We wasted our one-hour in the search of parking then someone told us to park our car near “lift wali parking”. Shimla has a nice 6 storey car parking near a lift that takes you straight to the mall road.
Parking charges are 35 rupees for 2 hours and 58 rupees for 4 hours. I suggest you to take the 4-hour parking ticket.
The parking is near old bus stand. In case of any confusion, just ask someone where is the lift wali parking.
The lift is not free. They charge Rs.10 per person for one way. Usually there is a queue of people because lift’s capacity is 8 persons at a time. Our turn came after waiting for 10 minutes in the line.
3:00 PM – The Mall, Ridge and Church
Lunch at the mall
We reached at the mall and were feeling hungry. There are so many options to eat on the mall road.
We grabbed a pack of strawberries (favorite fruit of my son) and also found a vegetarian restaurant just after the walk of 2 minutes on the mall road.
After a delightful lunch, we spent around 30 minutes on mall road. We were curious to see the ridge, so we did not spend any more time on shopping.
Sunny day on the ridge
It was a pleasant day in the mid of December. The environment was cold and we enjoyed the sun fully while walking on the ridge.
The ridge offers you a stunning view of mountains. The kids were playing in the open area. You can also enjoy the horse ride on the ridge if you wish to. Our son was enjoying while watching the horses but refused to ride on them.
We relaxed and spent some time in the sunny day.
The Christ Church
The church is located in the right side on the ridge. Well, we found the church gates closed because the visiting time was over, but still we managed to have a glimpse of the inside of the church.
Christmas preparation was being done inside the church, which we were able to see from the side room. Our son enjoyed watching santa clause from outside the church.
We cherished the moments of christmas even without entering into the church.
5:00 PM – Jakhu Temple
We didn’t plan Jakhu temple for the day because it is located at the top of the hill. But, we found an easy option to reach while roaming around the church.
Himachal transport has started a public taxi (Tavera Car) from ridge to Jakhu Temple. They charge just 20 rupees per persona and takes you to the temple. We easily found the seat in that car and reached the temple in 15 minutes.
There is only one taxi that keeps on taking trip from the ridge to Jakhu Temple. The driver told us to wait at the same place on the return time after dropping us near Jakhu temple. We had 30 minutes to visit the temple while the taxi would complete the trip to ridge.
We enjoyed the view of a tall hanuman statue that could be seen from the base of ridge or from anywhere in Shimla.
The temple was surrounded by hundreds of monkeys. The locals warned us to hide the eatables and spectacles. I don’t know why, but monkeys love to steal away the spectacles and goggles of people.
There were paintings inside the temple that depicts the story of Ramayana. Our son enjoyed watching the visual story of Ramayana, which he was listening since last few days from his friends.
We came back to the ridge in an hour.
We spent some time on the mall road while going back towards lift. The atmosphere was getting chillier and we were not prepared to handle that much of cold.
Also, we could not buy anything from the market as we were running out of time.
We came back to the parking, put the location of the hotel in Google maps and moved towards our hotel.
I will write our experience and review of the resort in a separate article.
Day – 2 (Resort, Mountains, Shimla)
We woke up with a lot of freshness and enthusiasm. The outside view from our window was just awesome.
We could see the beautiful mountains all around. I spent one hour walking around the resort. It was so peaceful by just looking at those colorful hills.
We got ready for our second day trip to Shimla after having the breakfast in the resort.
We thought of visiting Nature Park in kufri or green valley, but that would take at least 3-4 hours. We really loved the mall road of Shimla and wanted to spend some more time there. We had to choose between the offbeat attraction or main attraction of Shimla.
Since it was a bright sunny day, we decided to spend time on the Ridge rather than in the nature park.
We packed our luggage and checked out from the resort.
The Mall Road
We did not waste any time to park our car and went straight to the parking lot near the lift. And, we spent more time on the mall road while doing shopping and eating street food. We had more energy than yesterday to walk on the mall road.
It is the famous junction on the mall road where you can see beautiful mountains on one side, the mall road on second side, ridge on the third side and a road towards kali bari temple on the fourth side.
We clicked some photos on the scandal point and moved towards the ridge.
The ridge has so much of beautiful open space that you would love to go there again and again.
I was feeling like being in San Francisco because of the open space, blue sky and sweet sunshine.
Here is our picture when we were in SFO.
We did not do anything extra that day on the ridge. The purpose of our vacation was to relax for sometime, so we settled near the statue of Indira Gandhi.
We had some snacks and enjoyed the sun like the day before.
After spending a quality time for 2-3 hours on the ridge, we decided to visit the Kali Bari temple, which is just 15 minutes walk away from the ridge.
We are not a temple going people; we just love to explore new places.
Kali Bari temple is a small temple on the corner from where you can see beautiful mountains all around.
Our son was tired after walking, so we decided to sit in the temple premises. We enjoyed for about 30 minutes in the temple and waited till our son got his energy back.
Then we walked back to the parking area.
We started our journey back to Chandigarh. Our son was tired so we let him sleep in the car. It took us 3 hours to reach back to our home.
Cost of the Trip from Chandigarh to Shimla by Car
We spent about 7,500 rupees from our pocket but won the cash prize of 10,000 from HolidayIQ. Read my detailed post about how we earned 10,000 rupees for enjoying a trip to Shimla.
